Step 1:
We’ll start this guide on how to draw a leaf by outlining the leaf. We’ll use two lines that start at the same point, curve outward, and then inward to meet at a point. The reference image we provide will guide you on how it should look.
Step 2:
Each leaf needs a stem, which we’ll add to the next part of your leaf design. The stem is formed by two curved lines starting from the center of the flat side of the leaf. The stem will then be finished with a flat line at the end.
Step 3:
Your leaf design is starting to come together now! We’ll add a few more details to it before we’re done, and in this step, we’ll add a centerline to your sheet. This line is called the midrib, and the leaf veins will connect to it. We’ll add these veins in the following step, so remove a slightly curved line toward the middle of the leaf directly.
Step 4:
In step 3 of our how to draw a leaf guide, I mentioned leaf veins, and we will add them in this step! These will be easy to draw, but they will make all the difference in making your leaf drawing look better and real. Add a few lines in the midrib of the leaf to draw them. These vary in length, so you can check the reference image to understand the lengths. You can also add more or fewer lines to create a different look! You can find leaves in the garden or search for images to inspire you and make those details look for variation.
Step 5:
Your leaf drawing is already in great shape, but a few extra details can often be enough for a drawing! You can add more by drawing lines and small circles to give the leaf more texture. It’s been so much fun drawing a leaf with you, but there’s one more step left in this guide, and it’s fun! Your sheet needs color now, and you have many options. Leaves can be any color you can imagine, giving you a wide range of colors to draw when you complete this guide to draw a leaf. You could turn it into a nice green leaf like the example used in this guide. You can also turn it into a gorgeous fall leaf by coloring it yellow, orange, or red. You don’t have to be authentic to wear your favorite colors! You can color it with blues, pinks or purples if you want! Another fun idea you could try if you’re feeling more crafty is to find crispy brown leaves outside if it’s the right time of year.
You can shred them, spread a thin layer of glue on the sheet, then use the shredded sheet to give your design some real texture!
